the election commission declared. The news took Twitter to its knees Sunday.
Morsi beat Ahmed Shafiq, former prime minister under ousted leader Hosni Mubarak, by a narrow margin. According the commission, Morsi won 51.7% of the vote while Shafiq received 48.3%.
Revolutionaries, observers, protesters and journalists shared the election action as it unfolded online, as should be expected following social media's historic role in the Egyptian uprisings since January 2011. The most popular hashtags included #EgyPresElex, #Egypt, #Morsi, and #SCAF, of which several were top trending topics worldwide.Mashable
