"Gov. Romney disagrees with Richard Mourdock, and Mr. Mourdock's comments do not reflect Gov. Romney's views," Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul told The Hill in a statement Wednesday morning. "We disagree on the policy regarding exceptions for rape and incest but still support him." – Romney stands by Mourdock, won't ask him to pull down ad [The Hill]
FOR LADIES still confused how Mitt Romney will treat reproductive health rights as president, I think everyone now has a crystal clear idea.
Romney's endorsed a man who has said a victim of rape must accept that it's "something that God intended to happen," but stands by him after Mourdock refuses to apologize or retract his statement.
Considering Paul Ryan, Romney's running mate, has the same view as Mourdock, I'm not surprised. Women learned today, if there ever was a doubt, that this is the exact type of policy Mitt Romney would sign as president.
"For those who want to kind of twist the comments and use them for partisan, political gain, I think that's what's wrong with Washington these days," Mourdock told reporters at a news conference. "I spoke from my heart; I spoke with my principle; I spoke from my faith. And if others want to somehow turn those words and use them against me, again, that's what's wrong with Washington today. [CNN]
Blaming "Washington" comes out of the canned consultancy culture that has absolutely no shame. For independents let me translate: it's politics as usual on right-wing steroids.
Richard Mourdock is not only being given a pass by the Republican presidential nominee for one of the most harmful statements a woman could hear, but makes a mockery of violence against women, then compounds it through the Republican belief a woman should pay for the act by being forced to give birth.
This sends a strong message to Romney's base, but quite another to independents, libertarian Democrats and the scores of women who might be considering voting Republican.
How long are Republicans going to keep listening to these cretins without calling them on their "spoke from the heart" excuses about inflammatory comments on rape that require nothing less than a full retraction?
What Romney-Ryan and Mourdock, along with Todd Akin, are all saying to women is simple.
It's rape. It's done.
Make the best of it.
Have a baby.
No wonder voters come home and choose to vote Democratic. This is obscene.
"While Mitt Romney is rightly distancing himself from Richard Mourdock today, his ad endorsing Mourdock's extreme candidacy continues to air in Indiana," Murray said in a statement. "If Mitt Romney is serious about repudiating these heinous views on rape, he will take down this ad immediately. National Republicans cannot paper over Richard Mourdock's heinous views on rape. Enough is enough. The Republican Party needs to stop the coddling and take a stand against the horribly offensive and dangerous views of the Tea Party and their extreme candidates." [Huffington Post]
