Wake Forest's Cheyenne Woods

As Tiger Woods prepares to return to competitive golf this week at the Masters, his niece is making headlines, too.

Cheyenne Woods, a sophomore at Wake Forest, grabbed her first college victory Sunday at the Bryan National Collegiate, becoming the first Demon Deacon to claim an individual title this season.

Woods, whose grandfather was Earl Woods (Tiger's late father) and is the daughter of Tiger's half-brother, shot 5-under 211 at the Bryan Park Players Course in Brown Summit, N.C., to beat Tennessee sophomore Nathalie Mansson by two shots.

Woods' score is the second-lowest 54-hole score in Wake Forest history. Her second-round 3-under 69 tied the lowest 18-hole score of her career.

"This feels really good," Woods told Golfweek. "It feels like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. I've been in contention a bunch this season so it just feels good to finally play that third good round in a row and pull out a win."

Woods, No. 34 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, took a share of the lead in Round 2 after a 3-under 69 that included six birdies. She closed with an even-par 72 and made 11 birdies for the tournament.

"I really just was trying to stay calm today and think about how I've been playing in the last couple of rounds," Woods said. "I didn't want to focus too much on the outcome. I just tried to stay in the moment and let the shots happen."

Virginia freshman Brittany Altomare and Duke freshman Lindy Duncan, who won the individual title at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic March 28, tied for third at 2-under 214. Macarena Silva, a junior at Florida State, was alone in fifth another shot back. Wake Forest freshman Michelle Shin, with whom Woods was tied for the lead entering the final round, carded a 5-over 77 Sunday and fell to T-6 at even-par 216.

In the team race, Florida State posted 9-over 873 to win its second consecutive spring start. Wake Forest was a shot back at 874 .

The Seminoles got their first win of the spring season March 23 with a 33-shot victory at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate.
