Winnipeg isn't somewhere that springs instantly to mind when you mention 'civil unrest', but 93 years ago, the city's streets were a battleground. The Winnipeg General strike led to thousands taking to the streets in a series of violent clashes that culminated in a single death; a Ukrainian man named Mike Sokolowski. According to some sources, Sokolowski was killed because he was throwing a rock. According to others, he was an innocent caught in the crossfire.

Good thing that doesn't happen anymore, eh?

But before this gets entirely too Ben Elton (The angry, political Ben Elton not the musical based on a band Ben Elton), let's talk about Bloody Saturday.

Written by Adam Campbell and illustrated by his sister, Carly, the book was produced as part of an independent project for Red River College, where Adam is a student. It focuses partially on Sokolowski and provides a fictionalized explanation for what led to his death, building a fictional story around established historical events. It's a smart way of looking at a bloody moment in the city's history and it's worked before, with Danny Schur's musical Strike!.

Adam, perhaps, aware it's not the easiest sell on the planet, has not only got a lot of positive Canadian media attention , he's also made it free to download from the 19th to the 23rd of June for Kindle and the Kindle front ends for Apple and Google devices.  So if you like your civil unrest historical and Canadian go to Adam's site and pick the book up now.
