Mayor Bloomberg's
cancellation of the New York City Marathon in the wake of Hurricane Sandy this evening, while completely understandable, was unexpected for the 40,000 runners who had been told hours earlier it was on.
A few of my friends were all trained up for the race.
So when they heard the news about it being canceled, they refused to give up hope -- and the peak training they had finally achieved.
After a few minutes of Googling, they signed up for the Delaware & Lehigh Heritage Marathon, which is scheduled to go on as planned on Sunday at 8AM near Allentown, PA -- only a 1.5 hour drive from Manhattan. As of 6:30 this evening, registration was still open. (It's since been sold out.)
There's also the Manchester City Marathon on Sunday in New Hampshire, which is closer to a five-hour car ride.
Or for those around next weekend, there's the Select Medical Corporation Harrisburg Marathon in Pennsylvania. Or the Bucks County Marathon in PA as well.
None of these races will have the course, crowds, or prestige of the NYC Marathon, but they get the job done.
Lots of other races are happening this fall in various spots around the country. Check out marathonguide.com for more information.
Now my friends just have to make sure they have enough gas to get them to the starting line.
