Most would agree that AJ has become one of the more interesting characters on WWE television. Not because she's a sex object or that she's HAWT, but because she's mysterious. WWE has relied on nuance to tell AJ's story and it's been a refreshing change of pace. But it's not over yet.
First, let's look at her story thus far. AJ has had a rough year. Her now ex boyfriend Daniel Bryan mistreated her for months before blaming her for his loss of the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania. Bryan kicked her to the curb and unleashed a scathing verbal lashing in which he wished she was never born.
She slumped into a psychotic depression and turned on her friends. But then she started flirting with CM Punk, one of Daniel Bryan's oldest acquaintances. Though reluctant at first, it seems Punk came around to the idea of "digging crazy chicks". Then Kane was added to the mix. Like AJ, he is emotionally unstable and pretty volatile and thus has become an object of AJ's fascination.
The one question I always look at in these stories is: where will it end? The plot surrounding AJ has thickened so much that the endgame is clouded. Not in a confusing way, either, in an intriguing way. First she wanted Bryan back, but then it looked like she wanted Punk, and now maybe Kane is what she wants.
Not only do I ask those questions, I try to answer them with what I'd do. So what would I do?
We've followed AJ's story as she's been mistreated by Daniel Bryan, the man she idolized. Bryan treated her like the little girl who should sit quietly in the corner and speak when spoken to. So then, for AJ's character to come out of this a changed person (as characters should following stories), she needs to learn from that and use it.
I'd have AJ show her cunning and shrewdness. Somehow show that she can fight her own way to the top but also help someone else get to the top. She has a knack at succeeding in WWE. Daniel Bryan – who hasn't been doing so well since WrestleMania - sees this and goes crawling back. Bryan retracts all the horrible things he said about her, apologizes and butters her up. Then asks her to get his career back on track.
AJ agrees. AJ has been taken in by Bryan and will wind up getting hurt again. Everyone tells her so. She doesn't listen. It looks like her heart has beaten her better judgement and she'll take back her abuser regardless. That plot point is focused on. Repeated.
However, contrast with the dynamic we saw before, AJ starts to take control of the relationship. She wears the pants and becomes a dominatrix to Bryan. He needs her help to get back on track, but she's no longer the shy little girl who'll be bossed about. Now she does the bossing.
Bryan's career turns around after he starts associating with AJ again. He racks up win upon win until finally, he's ready to challenge for the top championship. It doesn't matter which title that is, but for the sake of this piece let's say it's the World Championship (since he did lose this title in the first place it brings the story full circle). Finally, with AJ's help, Bryan has managed to earn himself a World Championship opportunity. His LAST one. Important note.
But, just when it seems he's going to become World Champion, AJ turns on him. She prevents him becoming World Champion on his last opportunity at the title, verbally berates Bryan and then, as he did to her, kicks him to the curb. Maybe throw in a kick between the legs for good measure.
AJ's revenge is complete. She used brain – not tits and ass – to outsmart Daniel Bryan and get her revenge on the man who treated her so poorly for so long. AJ then becomes one of the stronger female characters on the show, but can also move on from Daniel Bryan and start dominating the Divas locker room.
