Twitterstorm – damage report « Lack of Environment

I received this email late last night, while the storm was still raging but, even though it is now officially over, hopefully this will not be the end of the story… I say this because, being human, I think we all have our ideological 'blind spots': For many very sincere environmentalists it is genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or nuclear power (the legacy of which is another problem that cannot be made to disappear by wishful thinking)… However, for many people today their ideological blind spot is still seeing growth as the answer to all our problems; and fossil fuels as its (non-renewable and climate-disrupting) power source. However, one should not pick a fight with the basic laws of physics. But I must not go on about this now… Here is the Twitterstorm update from 350.org…

—————-

Dear Twitter-stormers,

You've been working hard all day to get the #EndFossilFuelSubsidies message out to your friends, world leaders, and celebrities—and thanks to our astonishing rate of 3+ tweets per second, we're being heard loud and clear.

We plan on stoking this twitter storm for quite a while longer, but here are just a few exciting updates from the day:

  • American Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi shares her support:
  • Our twitter storm gets coverage in The Guardian.
  • Tweets at large in the real world! Check out the photos from Sydneyearlier today & real world projections of our Twitterstorm should be starting in New York soon.
  • We're "trending"! With our high tweet rate, #EndFossilFuelSubsidies was just trending first in the U.S. and second globally—making it one of the most talked about topics online in the entire world. According to Topsy.com, an article on #EndFossilFuelSubsidies was the #1 story in the world—even beating Justin Bieber!

This is encouraging news, and it's clear that our demands for clean energy and green jobs are cutting through the noise.

Now, here are two easy ways to keep this storm raging:
1. We need to show our world leaders that this storm isn't about to let up anytime soon—can you get 5 of your most Twitterific friends to join the Twitterstorm?  Just share this Facebook event on your wall, tag five of your savviest friends (here's how), and ask them to join in!
2. Let's keep trending! Retweet this tweet now.

Today's twitter storm was something new and different for us and we couldn't be more grateful that you—and 10,000 other folks—joined our Social Media Team.

Let's keep tweeting and re-tweeting to #EndFossilFuelSubsidies!

Thanks,

Allyse for the 350.org team.

P.S. Just for fun: a 350 supporter whipped up this great Ryan Gosling image about how we need to #EndFossilFuelSubsidies. Can you spare a retweet for Sensitive Ryan Gosling?
