Newsprint / CET 2012 online counseling hot news: Know which branch to choose for your engineering course: IT companies struggling, very important note for CET 2012 students
As we all know that CET 2012 online counseling is in progress, currently the 'Document Verification' process has been going on. Most of the students would have already decided about which branch they will be getting in and which college they will be getting in etc. Some have dreams and planned careers and some are waiting till the last minute to see where they will end up. Planning for good college and branch is good but the best thing to do during counseling time is to visit our website and know about the current affairs and trending topics.
This post wont necessarily force any student to change their mind but their thoughts on this will be appreciated and will help them in the future.
The trending topic of the year would undoubtedly be the fall and struggle of IT companies. Yes, getting placed in a IT company is getting difficult now. People already working for IT companies are feeling the heat.
What is a "bench" in IT company?
Bench is a term used for reserve workers or back up workers. Usually they are some one who replaces working employees when they take holidays or bench workers join new projects if there are insufficient workers. No client will accept delay in starting a project due to lack of workers, so companies always keep backup or bench workers.
20% of the total employees are bench workers who have no work most of the time and work only when there is shortage of workers. Now that the concept of bench is understood, we proceed with a small story taken from newspaper article.
Ketan Jalan joined a top-tier IT company in July last year, immediately after his engineering degree. It's one year now, and he has not worked on a single project yet. He still goes to office every day. He went through a Java certification training. He's now registered for an Oracle course. But the training courses don't take much time. He spends most of his "working hours" Googling, playing or in the cafe. "It's boring," he says. But that may be understating the problem. It's also not good for his career, because he has no work experience to show for himself. And work experience is what matters most in salary increases and promotions.
There are many like Jalan, because IT companies failed to anticipate the sudden drop in demand on account of the global economic slowdown over the last year. Some employees are even allowed to stay at home.
In this article Ketan is a bench worker. The bench is continuously increasing in number meaning the number of projects is decreasing, number of people working is decreasing.
Facts about current IT companies:
In normal times, IT companies have about 20% of their employee base on the bench. But as of the quarter ended March, the employee utilization rate (which is the opposite of the bench proportion) had fallen to about 67% for many, including Infosys, Wipro and MindTree — which means some 33% of their employees were on the bench. Considering that Infosys has 1.5 lakh employees, nearly 50,000 today are doing nothing.
*** The IT companies have delayed placements for 2011, 2012 batches already. So what students should think before counseling would be about the future and their circle of interests. If you want a stable job secured life there are many branches for that namely mechanical, civil, electrical and architecture etc. Spare your thoughts about this. All the best for CET counseling. Check this site for current affairs and CET updates.
